With its highly-skilled and specialized workforce and a culture of innovation, Southern California (CA) is an aerospace epicenter:
- The aerospace industry represented 90,100 jobs in Southern CA in 2016, 14% of U.S. industry employment. Southern CA aerospace generates 268,100 total jobs including jobs in its supply chain.
- All the major firms and primes in aerospace have offices or headquarters in L.A. County, including Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Lockheed, Raytheon SpaceX, Aerojet Rocketdyne, and Virgin Galactic.
The largest industries in Orange County include manufacturing with 258,196 jobs, followed by healthcare with 191,217 jobs. Orange County’s major advanced manufacturing sectors include advanced electronics, aerospace, analytical instruments, biopharmaceuticals, communications equipment, and medical devices. Employment in advanced manufacturing accounted for over 72% of total manufacturing employment in 2016.
Orange County’s medical device industry, a product of the county’s strengths in advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and information technology, has grown into one of the nation’s strongest industry cluster hubs and centers of excellence.
