Thomas Murphy joined the Canadian Army in 2002 as a Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineer Officer attending the Royal Military College of Canada with a BSc in Chemistry. He served as Platoon Commander and Company 2IC, as well as deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 with Maintenance Company of the National Support Element. In 2013 he was given an Exchange position with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center (DEVCOM AC) at Picatinny Arsenal, NJ within the Advanced Materials Technology Branch. During this three-year position he was responsible for R&D of Additive Manufacturing (AM) for various projects, including the Rapid Fabrication via Additive Manufacturing on the Battlefield (R-FAB). After finding a passion for AM, he moved into the private sector, working for Cimquest and Shapeways from 2017 to 2024. His current role with the New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII) started in March of 2024, as the Director of Defense Manufacturing Technologies. Here he oversees the testing of new technologies and materials, along with the workforce development of Polymer, Metals and Electronics Advanced Manufacturing.
