Alex Hotz currently serves as a Product Development Engineer with the Office of Advanced Manufacturing (OAM) at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Over the past four years, he has played a key role in developing regulated 3D-printed medical devices in the fields of maxillofacial surgery, radiation oncology, and orthotics. His work has helped two class 2 medical devices, the Oromaxillofacial Advanced Surgical Planning (OMF ASP) System and the VHA Radiotherapy Bolus, achieve FDA 510(k) clearance. These were VHA's first two 510(k) cleared class 2 medical devices as both a developer and manufacturer and also the first two instances of any hospital receiving FDA clearance for a 3D-printed class 2 medical device. Alex also supported the development and testing of 3D-printed PPE and nasal swabs as part of an FDA, VHA, NIH, and America Makes collaboration during the Covid-19 pandemic.
