US Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center (Army-GVSC), Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC), the Applied Science and Technology Research Organization of America (ASTRO America) are working together to build parts using the largest hybrid freeform metal 3D printer in the world (print volume of 30’x20’x12’). The goal is to develop a novel advanced manufacturing capability at the vehicle scale, to support the Organic Industrial Base (OIB). The first phase of the multi-year collaboration focuses on proof-of-concept prints for exemplary large components through partnerships with aerospace, transportation, and defense original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). In this talk, learn directly from engineers as they encounter and address the technological obstacles associated with the fabrication of four different large metal parts.
