Cobra Aero (Hillsdale, MI) designs, develops and manufactures roughly 2,000 engines per year for specialty markets. Founded in 2012, they have a particular expertise for direct-injection, two-stroke engines such as those used in their UAV product line. Working in partnership with HiETA, nTopology and Renishaw, Cobra have developed an innovative new engine design, utilizing several cutting-edge software tools and approaches. Building on their in-house CNC manufacturing and rapid-prototyping capability, Cobra initially contacted Renishaw to explore the possibilities of metal additive manufacture. It was clear that there could be a real opportunity to increase performance and improve the value proposition by developing a new engine design specifically for AM. HiETA Ltd.(Bristol, UK) are specialists in the design and development of heat exchangers and turbo machinery for additive manufacture. With HiETA’s expert guidance in thermal analysis and CFD, Cobra was able to determine the viability of the new concept and begin development. nTopology Inc. (New York, NY) are purveyors of one of the most exciting software products the AM landscape has seen. With nTop Platform, Cobra were able to vastly improve their ability to rapidly iterate and simplify geometry creation with implicit modelling. Renishaw is a company with 45+ years of manufacturing experience. From the car or plane you used to get here, to the cell phone in your pocket – Renishaw will more than likely have had a hand in their production. During the project, Renishaw provided guidance on design for manufacture, process development and optimization.
