With the increasing demand for materials that can withstand extreme environments, niobium (Nb)-based alloys are emerging as essential in both space and aerospace applications that require high-temperature performance. Recent advancements in additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have enabled the production of complex components from Nb alloys, unlocking significant innovation in space engineering. In collaboration with Alloyed Ltd., TANIOBIS GmbH is pioneering the use of Nb alloys like C-103 and FS-85 in AM processes. These alloys offer a unique combination of low density, high thermal conductivity, and impressive mechanical strength at elevated temperatures. While C-103 is widely used in conventional manufacturing, FS-85 is drawing attention for its exceptional strength under extreme conditions, making it an excellent candidate for additively manufactured parts in demanding applications. Processing these materials through AM not only allows for intricate geometries but also enhances performance in harsh environments. This presentation will examine the role of Nb alloys in AM, focusing on their benefits, challenges, and future potential in next-generation space and aerospace technologies.
