Standardization becomes increasingly crucial as the additive manufacturing technology continuously grow and redefine what is possible with the technology. Additive manufacturing technology is sophisticated that needs monitoring, assessing and controlling of every stage in the process chain to ensure consistency and repeatability of the parts. Standards are required for certification by providing guidelines and requirements against which components can be certified. Lack of standards delays the certification of components in highly regulated industries such as aerospace, medical, and automobile. While some standards are currently available, that is not enough to support the broader adoption of the technology. This presentation covers the following topics: The current standards development landscape for AM, how the standards are evolving, the hindrances for broader adoption of AM, and the research and development activities to drive the standard development process.
