The aerospace industry is in need revolutionary manufacturing technology, driven by the increasing demand for advanced materials that deliver superior performance while optimizing weight and efficiency. This presentation explores the transformative potential of Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) in space applications, highlighting how their unique properties can address the complex challenges of modern manufacturing.
FGMs, which exhibit gradual variations in composition and structure, enable the design of components that can withstand extreme conditions while providing tailored mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. By integrating FGMs into the manufacturing process, FormAlloy leverages its state-of-the-art Directed Energy Deposition (DED) technology to fabricate components with enhanced performance metrics, such as improved fatigue resistance, reduced thermal expansion, and increased corrosion resistance.
Through metallurgical studies and practical applications, we will demonstrate how FGMs are deposited, capabilities and limitations with FGMs, and how they can optimize the performance of critical aerospace components, including combustion chambers and turbine blades.
Attendees will gain insights into how and how accurate FGMs are being deposited, limitations of the process, the unique advantages of FGMs, and how what is coming next on the FGM frontier.
