This presentation will provide an update on the collaborative efforts between industry, government, military, and academia to develop industry wide specs, standards, and allowables for Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) of 7000 series Aluminums. Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Astro America, the US Army, the US Air Force, and multiple other subcontractors have been working together to rapidly optimize, qualify, and deploy the ability to produce alternative parts to traditional castings, forgings, and extrusions via AFSD. This has required the development of AWS and AMS specs, as well as development of a qualification test matrix to meet MMPDS Book 2, C and D Basis Materials Allowables. We will walk through the thought process behind the qualification, the current status of the USAF MAI and Astro America funded efforts, and plans to demonstrate and implement this process for military structural spares. A discussion around how this process will effect the US industrial base contested logistics strategy will ensue.
