Jan Van Espen, Intelligence Manager at Materialise, studied aerospace engineering and gradually evolved into becoming an expert in AM process certification for the aircraft and medical industry. Starting in Toulouse (France), Jan had several functions in aerospace design, maintenance and certification. Triggered by AM technology and its potential, he started 14 years ago at Materialise with the goal of bringing AM to a higher manufacturing standard. Jan initially was leading the process consultant team at Materialise to assist external customers in their AM process optimization. In 2014, Jan joined the medical business unit being responsible for the NPI process - incl. the process qualification - for AM implant production, which successfully concluded in 2017 by receiving FDA approval for the in-house 3D printed titanium medical implants. Since 2020, Jan acts as process consultant towards Materialise's strategic partners to leverage their AM process qualification/production processes based on his own in-depth expertise. In parallel, Jan also manages the Materialise AM data intelligence team which investigates and provides tools for AI-powered analytics on AM data.
