RAPID + TCT 2022 Day 2 Recap

“I feel a good heartbeat in the conference. People are excited by the technology and that’s wonderful to see.” – Juan Ivaldi, Nikon Corporation

The second day of RAPID + TCT 2022 was another action-packed stellar day. Thousands of attendees were immersed in the latest additive manufacturing technology, engaged with conference speakers, explored new products, gained insights into innovative solutions and networked with leaders of our community. With so much happening at the event to usher in the next level of AM, we’ve assembled the top takeaways from the day.

From exhibitor highlights to keynote presentations and more, here is a recap of day two at RAPID + TCT 2022.

AM industry advisor Todd Grimm once again kicked off the day, giving attendees a preview of the day before introducing the Day Two Welcome Sponsor, Stratasys. CEO Yoav Zeif gave a brief presentation centered around ideas becoming reality through additive manufacturing.

After Stratasys, SME Executive Director & CEO Bob Willig took the stage to congratulate Dr. Slade Gardner, who won the 2022 AM Industry Achievement Award yesterday. He also brought up Duncan Wood, Chief Executive, Rapid News Publications Ltd. And Chairman, VNU Rapid News Co. Ltd. who spoke of SME and TCT’s combined global network, industry knowledge and renewed alliance for future events.

With the audience excited for the future RAPID + TCT events to come, Bob Willig introduced keynote speaker, Brian Baughman, Manufacturing Chief Engineer at Honeywell Aerospace.

Industrializing Metal Additive in the Aviation World

An energetic speaker with a strong ability to break down complex topics for more general consumption, Baughman started his keynote briefly explaining the various things Honeywell makes for the aerospace industry before delving into the many ways the organization uses—and wishes to use—AM processes and technologies to offer a new, improved, faster, innovative and more cost-efficient way to make parts.

After listing off a few barriers to full industry adoption of AM—including government regulation of aviation and lack of published resources on AM design versus traditional manufacturing—Baughman kept the audience optimistic as he listed the processes Honeywell employs to keep costs down and efficiency maximized, such as sand and ceramic mold printing, laser powder bed fusion and cold spray technology.

Baughman ended his keynote citing three ways the AM community can develop better, more widely adopted solution, including:

  • Standards and specifications from bodies like ASTM International
  • In-process monitoring using sensors that track build processes and detect abnormalities
  • Integrated computational materials engineering that uses complex parameters to predict material properties

Baughman ended his keynote with his favorite quote, “Technology is not a spectator sport,” stressing that anyone, anywhere, at any age can be involved in pushing AM forward—we can’t just sit around and hope someone does the hard work for us.

Bright Minds Program Shows Students the Possibilities in AM

Students interacting with RAPID + TCT 2022 exhibits and industry leaders

These past two days, nearly a thousand middle and high school students have enjoyed their own track at RAPID + TCT 2022 called the Bright Minds Program.

During the interactive experience, students discovered everything they should know about the latest 3D technologies, viewed high-tech AM demonstrations, heard from dynamic keynote speakers (including Baughman), connected with colleges and universities with robust engineering programs and networked with leading global companies hirin g in the field.

We enjoyed hosting the next generation of AM workforce, and hope Bright Minds inspired students to join our community and explore career opportunities in the field.

RAPID + TCT 2022 Stories From the Floor

With 4+ football fields of exhibition space and more than 400 exhibitors present at RAPID + TCT 2022, attendees spent hours interacting with numerous innovative technologies, parts and AM industry leaders.

Today, we’re highlighting organizations that are molding the future of the AM and 3D printing industry.

DyeMansion | Booth #1920

  • Starting in 2015 with the first industrial coloring solution for powder bed fusion parts, DyeMansion has since expanded its Print-to-Product workflow to include Industry 4.0-ready systems that can be seamlessly integrated into production.

Essentium | Booth #3831

  • Providing rapid industrial 3D printing solutions that are disrupting traditional manufacturing processes, Essentium’s booth showcases the organization’s HSE 180 and 280i HT 3D printing platforms—each designed for industrial production environments. Each printer offers unique features you have to see firsthand.

GE Additive | Booth #2620

  • GE Additive has been making waves in AM for years, and 2022 is no different. Their RAPID + TCT booth showcases their refined printers and part-making processes—particularly, their M Line system for producing large-scale metal parts, as well as series, for aerospace and military applications.

Raise3D | Booth #1931

  • In March, Raise3D raised $15 million to expand its product portfolio for industrial production. At their RAPID + TCT 2022 booth, the organization is showcasing the change to come—from 3D printers and filaments to a broadened range of applications, particularly for high-precision manufacturing.

Stratasys | Booth #2601

  • After debuting a new suite of 3D printers at last year’s event in Chicago, Stratasys continues to demonstrate their commitment to industry innovation and acceleration with two new composite 3D printers, 16 new materials and slew of software updates.
