Navy Implements Liquid 3D Printer Afloat

A milestone has been reached in additive manufacturing (AM) with the United States Navy using this technology to successfully manufacture functional parts while afloat. Using a 3D printer onboard a Navy vessel, sailors were able to print essential parts. These parts passed quality and performance checks and were able to be used for their intended application.

This advancement will enable the Navy to 3D print parts on demand while at sea, providing these vessels with a workaround for logistical challenges and supply chain constraints when getting new or replacement parts. The results of this project showcase that AM technologies can enhance a Navy ship’s operational readiness and efficiency, which is a huge advantage when these vessels are in remote locations or combat situations.
