Erika Berg of Carbon and Vittorio Bologna of Riddell delivered the opening keynote presentation at RAPID + TCT 2019. The two companies collaborated to create Riddell’s new Diamond helmet, which features a 3D printed lattice liner developed using Carbon’s proprietary Digital Light Synthesis™ technology.

During their keynote, the pair explained the technology that went into making the Diamond platform possible and highlighted the product development journey between Carbon and Riddell that led to their impressive new helmet.

SME/Additive Manufacturing Community Awards

Also part of the opening event was a ceremony honoring the winners of our 2019 SME/Additive Manufacturing Community Awards. Awards were given in three categories:

Digital Manufacturing Challenge Award

Student designers and engineers are challenged to go beyond the classroom or laboratory and showcase their technical and commercial talents by demonstrating new and creative ways additive manufacturing can add value.

For this year’s challenge, cross-functional teams were challenged to leverage the design freedom inherent in additive manufacturing in order to simplify or integrate features and functions while simultaneously reducing size, weight and increasing the efficiency of a thermal management system, process or device.

2019 Winner | University of Waterloo, for their project titled, “The Copper Cooler: Heat Sink for CPUs”

  • Accepted by:
    • Lisa Brock
    • Gitanjali Shanbhang

2019 Co-Runner Up | Ohio State University, for their project titled, “Customized Phone Case Designed for Thermal Efficiency”

2019 Co-Runner Up | University of Waterloo, for their project titled, “Topology Optimized Wind Turbine Blades Using Sustainable Biomaterials

  • Accepted by:
    • PhD student and team leader, Alexander Martinez-Marchese
    • PhD student, Sagar Patel
    • PhD student, Pablo Enrique

Dick Aubin Distinguished Paper Award

The paper selected for the Dick Aubin Distinguished Paper Award describes an innovative application of rapid prototyping processes and techniques. The author was recognized for their contribution of ideas and information to the rapid technology and additive manufacturing industry.

2019 Winner | Michael Chang, Ph.D. candidate in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and research assistant at the University of Florida, for his paper, “Fast Robotic Soft Matter 3D Printing for Neurosurgical Phantoms Fabrication: Proof of Concept”.

Industry Achievement Award

Established in 2008 by SME’s Additive Manufacturing Community, the Industry Achievement Award was developed to recognize an individual, team or company for outstanding accomplishments that have had significant impact within the additive manufacturing industry or in any industry through the application of additive manufacturing technologies.

As the name suggests, the award recognizes achievements that have been implemented or deployed in a commercial/industrial environment rather than research investigative work.

2019 Winner | Professor Emanuel “Ely” Sachs, Co-Founder & Co-CTO of Desktop Metal, and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT

Upon receiving his award, Prof. Sachs gave a speech of thanks and appreciation—offering valuable advice for those in the industry and regaling the audience with stories from his career in 3D printing, including obtaining a patent for three-dimensional printing techniques dating back to April 1993.

Congratulations to this year’s winners!
