Head of R&D (US)
Dr. Shawn Kelly has been involved in the research and development of metal additive manufacturing since 1999. His technical focus is understanding and using relationships between the 3D printing processes, the materials that are produced, and post-printing operations necessary to manufacture industrial components using AM. In 2016 he joined Oerlikon as Head of the Additive Manufacturing Competence Center, which is responsible for developing 3D printing processes and serving as the technical foundation for Oerlikon’s Additive Manufacturing Component and Powder business. Prior to joining Oerlikon, he was Principal Engineer for the Additive Manufacturing team at EWI (2012-2016), Director of the Additive Manufacturing Consortium operated by EWI (2013-2016), Research Associate in the Laser Processing Division of the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University (2005-2012), and graduate research assistant at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (2003-2004). His undergraduate and graduate degrees are from the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Virginia Tech.
