Chief Technical Officer
Mark DeBruin has a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering and a Master’s degree in integrated mathematics. He has a breadth of experience that includes steel making, welding, machining, and heat treating. He has worked in casting since 1990 and has experience in casting ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. He has worked with nearly all foundry processes from green sand, no bake, investment, and die casting but his specialty is evaporative casting also known as full mold or lost foam casting.
He has worked for 5 startup companies including two he co-founded – the now closed Aesir Metals and his most recent endeavor Skuld LLC.
His technical accomplishments in evaporative casting are extensive. He has developed machining processes for foam so that rapid parts can be produced in as little as 4 days. This has been used for 700 lb iron gears to get a steel mill back up and running.
He has developed technology to lost foam cast steel including low carbon and stainless grades. In addition, he has been working on carbide free thin walled ductile iron for weight reduction efforts and has been able to go as thin as 0.060” making this material competitive with aluminum use in automotive and aerospace applications. He developed a patented process to surface alloy material during lost foam casting which results in surface hardening without the need to heat treat.
His most recent area of research is in additive manufacturing evaporative casting and a patent is pending on this process.
