Alex Plotkowski received a BS in Mechanical Engineering an MS in Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering from Grand Valley State University in 2012. He completed his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Purdue University in May of 2016 in which he studied the numerical modeling of heat and mass transfer in large scale metal casting processes. Following his Ph.D., he worked as a post-doc at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville under Suresh Babu researching heat transfer and solidification microstructure development in metal additive manufacturing. He is now a research staff scientist at Oak Ridge National Lab where he leads research related to modeling heat and mass transfer for solidification processing. His current work focuses on heat transfer modeling in additive manufacturing, understanding solidification microstructure development, and the design of next-generation Al alloys for AM.
